Are All Animal Herbivores?

And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. [Genesis 1:30]

This is unscientific. Why would God gave every animals to eat plant when He would have known that all animals doesn't eat plants?

Some Christians interpret this verse differently and argue that it doesn't mean that animals were exclusive herbivores. Instead, they interpret the verse as simply meaning that the animals were given access to all plant for food, much like humans were given access to every plant for food. There are two problems with this argument. First, even if we accept it as valid, we are faced with the same problems we had with the verse that describes every plant as being provided to humans for consumption: some plants are poisonous and dangerous. There are animals which can consume a greater range of plants than humans, but there are still some that can't be consumed by any animal because it will kill them. Thus this is still a scientific error because it contradicts what we know about the natural world.

Second, if we ignore the first problem for the sake of argument, the people who offer this interpretation are rarely the same ones who are also arguing that the Bible is inerrant. Thus even if they are mistaken here, the presence of an error doesn't really impact their religion or theology. Those who do argue that the Bible is inerrant are also the ones who are more likely to insist that all the animals were originally herbivores and are ideologically committed to the existence of a world where there was no death, no killing, and no "sin." For them, the contradiction between the biblical story and the scientific facts is more serious.
