Why it took 40 years to Israelites to travel from Egypt to Canaan?

"So the people of Israel ate manna for forty years until they arrived at the land where they would settle. They ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan." [Exodus 16:35]

It took the Israelites 40 years to travel from Egypt to Canaan, yet such a journey, even at that time, would have taken no more than a few weeks.
This can only be possible if Israelites went somewhere else before reaching Canaan or the Bible is corrupted.
