Status of Woman In Islam And Christianity

By Sister Layla Khorasania Mujahidah

1 Corinthians 14:34-35
"Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says.
If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church."

Islam sees woman as an individual who is equal to man. There is no distinction between them. They were created from one soul, and they were given one duty, namely the worship of Allah (SWT). In addition they were asked to behave well among them according to the Islam Instructions.

Allah says:
"Whoever works righteousness whether male female while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e., Paradise in the Hereafter)." (Quran16: 97)

The value of woman in Islam

Islam has preserved the woman from her birth until her death (when she becomes an elderly).

1. Woman as a baby

The Prophet said
"Whoever looks after two girls till they reach maturity, he and I will enter paradise together like these two (fingers).” (Muslim and Attirmidhi)

2. Woman as a wife

The Prophet (SAAW) said:
"Shall I not inform you about the best treasure a man can have? It is a virtuous woman who pleases him when he looks at her, who obeys him when he commands her, and who guards herself when he is absent from her." (Ahmad and An-Nasa'i)

He also said: “The best amongst you is the one who is the best towards his wife.” (Narrated by Attirmidhi)

3. Woman as a mother

In a famous incident, a man came to the Prophet, and asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who is the person who has the greatest right on me with regards to kindness and attention?" He replied: "Your mother." "Then who is?" He replied: "Your mother." "Then who is?" He replied: Your mother." "Then who is?" He replied: "Your father."
(Ahmad and Abu Dawud).

The Prophet also stated:
“Paradise lies under the feet of mothers.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari) A woman in Islam is the one who fears Allah (swt), who is on the path of the prophet Muhammad (saaw). The real woman in Islam is the one who is a slave of Allah (swt); the one whom Allah (swt) describes in His book the Quran such as: ‘Assia’ the wife of ‘Faraon’, and the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (saaw), as well as his daughters, without forgetting the wives of the followers.

Rights of woman in Islam

In Islam a woman has every right that a man has, may be it is different, but this difference does make them unique and special. And the most rights that a woman basks in are:

1. Woman’s right in inheritance

Islam gave the woman her right to inherit from his father, brother and husband.

Allah said: “There is a share for men and a share for women from what is left by the parents and those nearest related, whether the property be small or large-a legal share’’ (Quran 4:7)

And He also said: “Allah commands as regards your children (inheritance), to the male a portion equal to that of two female) (Quran 4:11)

Woman inherits half the sum his brother inherits, because what she inherits is hers, and she could keep it. She does not have the right to provide for her children and husband. This huge responsibility is given to the man who is responsible for giving a dowry to his new wife, and maintains his family including his mother, a not married sister, wife and children. The sister will in contrast receive a dowry and will be maintained by her husband. Any income she has besides her share of inheritance is hers, and anyone can interfere to get it without her permission and satisfaction.

Allah said: “And give to the women (whom you marry) their dowry (money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) with a good heart, but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you, take it and enjoy it without fear of any harm (as Allah had made it lawful)” (Quran 4.4)

2. Woman’s right in marriage

Islam has given many rights to woman in marriage. The marriage contract could not be legal without her permission. She has also the right to have a dower and maintenance which includes housing, clothes, food, from the husband. In addition, the man is responsible for her and her children, that is, a woman does not have the right to provide the man and their children.

Allah said: ‘’And give the women their dowries with a good heart.’’ (Quran 4:4)

Allah also said: ‘’ Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their property ‘’ (Quran 4:34)

A woman in Islam retains her family name after marriage, she is always known by her father’s name. She is also at total freedom to accept or reject her husband. Furthermore, she has the right to seek divorce, if necessary within the laws of Islam.

3. Woman’s right in education

Every person has the right to learn, and woman has the right to seek knowledge in order to know her rights and duties, and how she should educate her children according to Islam instructions.

The Prophet (SAAW) said: "To seek knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim."
(Declared Authentic by Shaikh Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen Al-Albaani)

Muslim here means male and female Muslims. There is no difference between them in seeking knowledge.

Yet thet say Women are oppressed In Islam

"The birth of a daughter is a loss" (Ecclesiasticus 22:3, Catholic Bible)
Also "Ritual impurity of a mother is TWICE as long if a female is born and not a male." (Leviticus 12:2-5)

Is it not clear that Islam again gives a higher status to females? What Islam came to eradicate -- the bad treatment of females -- still continues in today's Protestant and Catholic scriptures.
