Cigarettes started coming inside the Muslim countries in 14-15 century. Our scholars at that time thought that it was makroh just because of its disgusting smell. They were not aware of its harmful effects and the disease it can cause. But now the cigarettes are declared as haram by many Muslims scholars. Some of the scholars and organization that have declared as haram are

Zakir naik,
Mufti Ibrahim Desai,
Sheik Yaqubi,
Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam from Darul Iftaa Leicester, UK
Permanent Committee of Academic Research and Fatwa, Saudi Arabia
Majlis Tarjih and Muhammadiyah an organization is Indonesia, etc.
There are about 400-600 fatwa’s given declaring smoking as haram. Fatwa’s are coming from countries such as Indonesia, Egypt, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, etc

More over the Quran says In Surah Bakrah: Chapter2: Verse 195

"Be not cast by your own hands to ruin; and do good. Lo! Allah loveth the beneficent.”Means don’t kill yourself by your own hands"

The Quran also says in Surah7:verse157

"He allows them that which is lawful (At-Tayibaat) and prohibits them that which is unlawful"

Now am quoting you another ayat from Quran:

"Do not kill yourselves, for Allah is compassionate towards you. Whoever does so, in transgression and wrongfully, We shall roast in a fire, and that is an easy matter for Allah." (An-Nisaa 4:29-30)

If a person takes a poison on Monday and died because of that on Thursday then would it be called a natural death? Obviously no.! Similarly if a man smokes whole of his life and died because of lung cancer then would it be a natural death. Same answers No!

Prophet PBUH said:
"The Prophet said, "He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." (Sahih Bukhari 2.446)"

Further The Quran says in(An-Nisaa’: 29)

“And do not kill yourselves.”

 It also states:

"And forbids them what is bad." The Quran, Surah Al-'Araf, 7: 157We all know how bad cigarettes are for us. It contain tobacco which is harmful for everyone who smokes

Is cigarette lawful for us?

It can be judge by this Quranic Verse chapter 7: verse 157.

“He [the Prophet] commands them what is just, and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good, and prohibits them from what is BAD..."

Moreover, when a smoker exhaled means breath out the smoke it is inhale by someone else which also harms and affects him.
The Prophet said for this The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) has said:

"Nor be hurt or injure others".

Prophet (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) also said:
‘Verily, angels are harmed with that which harms people’.Narrated by Muslim in the “Sahih” (no. 649).

The Quran says for those who hurt other people in chapter 33: verse 58

“And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.”

Means if a person who is smoking and breathed out the smoke and if it is inhaled by someone else which effects his health or body parts that the person who is smoking have clearly committed a sin
Shaykh yaqoubi once told that his wife has having cancer and she is suffering from it just because her parents were heavy smokers.Smoking is haram if we think.

Jazak Allah for Reading
