Today we heard that Islam had been divided into 72 sects. This thing also plays as a hinder to accept Islam for some People. However, this issue is also gaining importance in Islamic debates and Non-Muslims also questioned which sects in Islam to follw?
Let me brief you with some major Islamic Sects

1. Sunni
2. Shia'a
3. Wahabis
4. Sufi
5. Hanfi

And there are about 73 divisions In Islam. You can See : http://www.real-islam.org/73_8.htm

Let see Which Sects the Muslims should Follow and what Quran and Ahadith had to say in it.

Firstly, Prophet Already knew that his community will be divided into sects before the secterian deiffrences took place. In a Hadith Prophet said:

Model Behavior of the Prophet (Kitab Al-Sunnah)
Dawud : Book 40 : Hadith 4579 Narrated AbuHurayrah:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: "The Jews were split up into seventy-one or seventy-two sects; and the Christians were split up into seventy one or seventy-two sects; and my community will be split up into seventy-three sects."

Secondly, All will go in Hell except one. This was confirmed by Prophet himself:

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith
Hadith 171 Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
"There will befall my Ummah exactly (all those) evils which befell the people of Isra'il, so much so that if there was one amongst them who openly committed fornication with his mother there will be among my Ummah one who will do that, and if the people of Isra'il were fragmented into seventy-two sects my Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Hell Fire except one sect. They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, which is that? Whereupon he said: It is one to which I and my companions belong. (those people who follow me and my comapnion)"
Transmitted by Tirmidhi.

What (Sect) Islam To Follow?

The Quran States In Several Verses "To Obey Allah And To Obey Messenger"

"O you who believe! Obey Allâh and His Messenger, and turn not away from him (i.e. Messenger Muhammad SAW) while you are hearing." [Qur'an 8:20]

"And obey Allâh and the Messenger (Muhammad Sallahu 'alayhe wa salam) that you may obtain mercy." [Qur'an 3:132]

"He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad Sallahu 'alayhe wa salam), has indeed obeyed Allâh, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad Sallahu 'alayhe wa salam) as a watcher over them. " [Qur'an 4:80]

Quran never ever states to obey any scholar such as Hanfi, Malaki, etc. Moreover Quran also prohibits dividing the religion into sects:

Quran 3:103
"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided."

Here the rope of Allah which Quran states is Holy Quran , mentioning that Muslims should follow it (hold it) and not be divided. Also as we have seen that Quran says "Obey Allah and Obey Messenger" in many of its verses. So, a true Muslim should follow the Quran and Authentic Hadith and be not divided.

The Quran says call yourself a Muslims. If someone asked who you are?, You should answer I am a Muslim, and should answer that you are a Shia, Sunni, Hanafi, Etc.

Quran says in Chapter 41 verse 33,
"And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."

It alsi says in Chapter 3 verse 64: Say,
"O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah ." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]."

Moreover, Quran also says in chapter 6:159
"Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects - you, [O Muhammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only [left] to Allah ; then He will inform them about what they used to do."

In this verse Allah clearly prohibited of dividing the Religion into sects.
However, True Muslims should follow the Quran and Sunnah and Shahih Ahadith. He can agree with the views of scholars as long as they confirm to the teachings of Quran and Sunnah. If only all Muslims read and understand Quran and hadith then Inshallah most of these differences would be solved and we would be one united Muslims Community.
We are Muslims , Not Sunni , Shia, Hanafi, Malaki, Deobandi, etc. We should follow Quran and Authentic Hadiths and should not be divided. If a man asked Prophet Muhammad who are you Shia or Sunni , the Prophet Would relpied, "No! Am A Muslim". Same would be the answer of our great scholars if somone posed a question to them they will answer I am a Muslim.
Imam Abu Hanifa would never reply that he was Hanafi.

Quran also states that Jesus and Mosses were Muslims:

Quran states in chapter 3 verse 52:
"But when Jesus felt [persistence in] disbelief from them, he said, "Who are my supporters for [the cause of] Allah ?" The disciples said," We are supporters for Allah . We have believed in Allah and testify that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]."

Quran says in chapter 3 verse 67:
"Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah ]. And he was not of the polytheists."
